Texas City is on the mainland side of Galveston Bay, but the county seat is across the causeway in Galveston. That geography shapes a debt lawsuit here. A credit card suit for $20,000 or less is often handled by a justice court with an office on Texas Avenue. A bigger case, or one the plaintiff files in a higher court, belongs to the courts on the island.

Texas Debt Law defends Texas City residents sued by credit card companies, debt buyers, collection agencies and lenders. One flat fee, English or Spanish, and phones answered seven days a week.

The Short Version

Texas City has about 57,875 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, and all of it is in Galveston County. If you live here and you've been sued over a consumer debt:

  • Your case is almost certainly in a Galveston County court.
  • If it's in justice court, your answer is due by the end of the 14th day after service.
  • If it's in a county court at law or district court, your answer is due by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days.
  • Either way, we can usually defend it without you leaving town.

Precinct 1 and the Texas City Office

Galveston County now organizes its justice courts into four precincts. The county's page for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 lists two offices: one at 2516 Texas Avenue, Room 135, in Texas City, and one in Bacliff. The same page notes that the court was previously JP Precincts 5 and 7, a reminder that older paperwork and outside directories may use precinct numbers that no longer exist.

Next door, Precinct 4 lists offices in La Marque and League City. Debt claims are usually filed in the precinct where the defendant lives, but the rules allow a few alternatives, and precinct lines don't follow city limits. The county's Justice of the Peace Courts page links to a precinct map, and your citation names the precinct that actually has your case.

In justice court, a suit by a bank, debt buyer, collection agency or lender is a "debt claim case." The plaintiff's petition has to include specific information about the account, and if the plaintiff bought the debt, about the original creditor and the assignment. Missing details are something we look for.

Higher Courts on the Island

Galveston County lists its county courts at law and its district courts at 600 59th Street in Galveston. Cases there move under the full civil rules. Plaintiffs commonly file motions for summary judgment, and for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026, the response is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Tex. R. Civ. P. 166a).

The trip across the causeway is the part people dread. In practice we file everything electronically and handle discovery and negotiation by phone and email. If a hearing requires you in person, we'll tell you in advance and prepare you for it.

How We Defend a Texas City Debt Case

First, we file your answer so the plaintiff can't get a default judgment. Second, we ask the questions the plaintiff would rather skip. Who owns this account now, and what proves it? When was the last payment, and is the suit within Texas's general four-year limit (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004)? If a debt buyer is suing on a time-barred consumer debt, that's prohibited outright (Fin. Code § 392.307). Do the statements support the balance, or only an affidavit?

Third, we act on the answers: a push for dismissal, preparation for trial, or a written settlement if that's the better path for you. Our firm has had hundreds of debt lawsuits dismissed, though results depend on each case's facts.

If a collector harassed you, threatened you or misrepresented the debt, you may have a separate claim under the FDCPA and Texas Debt Collection Act. That's a different legal service, not included in the debt-defense fee.

Texas City FAQs

My paperwork mentions "Precinct 5" or "Precinct 7." Is that wrong?

Not necessarily wrong, but probably out of date. Galveston County's Precinct 1 page says that court was formerly Precincts 5 and 7. What matters is the court named on the citation you were served with; send it to us and we'll confirm where the case is.

Is the Texas Avenue office open every day?

The county lists Monday through Thursday hours and shorter Friday hours for the Texas City office of Precinct 1. Check the county's page before going in person. If we represent you, we file electronically, so office hours rarely matter.

Can a creditor garnish my wages?

No. Texas protects current wages from garnishment for consumer debt (Tex. Const. art. XVI, § 28). Your homestead and up to $50,000 in personal property ($100,000 for a family) are generally exempt as well (Property Code chapters 41 and 42).

I already lost by default. Can anything be done?

Sometimes the judgment can be challenged, depending on timing and service. If not, we negotiate post-judgment settlements. Our debt lawsuit Q&A has more.
