Leander straddles a county line. Of its roughly 87,511 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 estimate), about 86% live in Williamson County and about 14% in Travis County. That split matters if you are sued over a credit card or a collection account, because the two counties run separate court systems in different cities.

Texas Debt Law defends Leander residents on both sides of the line for a flat fee. We e-file in both counties and work with you by phone, text and email.

Step One: Figure Out Which County You're In

Your city name doesn't answer this; your street address does. Two quick ways to check:

  • Look at your voter registration card, which shows your county and precinct.
  • Look at the citation. The caption names the court, such as "Justice Court, Precinct Two, Williamson County" or a Travis County court.

A plaintiff generally files a consumer debt case where you live. If you live on one side of the line and were sued on the other, that is worth raising with us early.

Williamson County Side

Justice courts. Williamson County's four justice court precincts hear civil suits up to $20,000. The nearest to Leander is Precinct Two in Cedar Park, which the county describes as serving the western corridor of Williamson County (Precinct Two page). Your exact precinct depends on your address; the county offers an address search.

Higher courts. Larger claims go to one of five county courts at law or the district courts at the Justice Center in Georgetown, the county seat.

Travis County Side

Justice courts. Travis County has five justice of the peace precincts. Each precinct page lists an Austin address. The county's precinct map shows which one covers your home.

Higher courts. The county says its civil and family courts are at 1700 Guadalupe Street in Austin (Travis County civil courts).

What Stays the Same in Both Counties

Statewide rules don't change at the county line:

  • Answer deadline, justice court: end of the 14th day after service (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
  • Answer deadline, county court at law or district court: 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days (Rule 99(b)). Summary judgment responses there are due 21 days after the motion is filed, for motions filed on or after March 1, 2026 (Rule 166a).
  • Limitations: generally four years on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004). Debt buyers can't sue on time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).
  • Exemptions: no garnishment of current wages for consumer debt (Tex. Const. art. XVI, § 28); homestead and up to $50,000 in personal property ($100,000 for a family) generally exempt (Property Code chs. 41 and 42).

Our Approach

Whichever county it is, the plaintiff carries the burden of proof. We file your answer, then examine what the plaintiff has: the original agreement, the statements, the records of any sale of the account, and who is signing the affidavits. Gaps in that chain are common with purchased accounts and can lead to dismissal. When negotiating is the better path, we negotiate, and we put the terms in writing.

If a collector has crossed the line with threats, false statements or repeated calls, a separate claim under the FDCPA or Texas Debt Collection Act may exist. That work is billed separately from debt defense.

Leander FAQs

My mail says Leander, but the lawsuit is in Travis County. Is that wrong?

Not if your home is in the Travis County part of Leander, which holds about 14% of the city's residents. Check your voter card. If your home is in Williamson County, ask us whether the venue can be challenged.

Do I have to go to Georgetown or downtown Austin?

Not to answer. We file electronically in both counties. If a judge sets a trial or hearing that needs you, we'll explain where to go and what will happen.

I moved from the Travis side to the Williamson side. Which county counts?

That depends on the facts, including where you lived when the suit was filed. Send us the citation and your address history and we'll look at it.

Can I look up my case online?

Usually. Williamson County runs a public judicial records site, and Travis County's justices of the peace page links to its own justice court judicial records search. Searching by your name normally turns up the case number, the court and any settings. If you can't find it, send us the citation and we'll track it down.

They already got a judgment against me. What now?

Judgments can sometimes be set aside, and many can be resolved by agreement. Our post-judgment settlement work uses the same flat fees as our defense work.
