Rosenberg has about 42,571 residents (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 estimate), all in Fort Bend County, and it borders Richmond, the county seat. For a Rosenberg resident, that means the county's main courthouse is close by. It also means that if a credit card company or debt buyer sues you in one of Fort Bend's higher courts, the case will be heard a short drive from home.
Being close to the courthouse doesn't make a lawsuit simpler, though. Texas Debt Law defends Rosenberg residents against banks, debt buyers, collection agencies and lenders for flat fees. We file electronically and handle most communication by phone and email, and our phones are answered 7 days a week.

Three Kinds of Court, One County
A debt suit against a Rosenberg resident will usually be in one of these Fort Bend County courts. Read the top of your citation to see which.
A justice of the peace court
Fort Bend County has seven justice of the peace courts across four precincts. Most credit card suits are filed in one of them because justice courts handle claims up to $20,000 (Gov't Code § 27.031). Precinct 4, the county's single-judge precinct, lists its office at 1517 Eugene Heimann Circle, Suite 100, in Richmond. Other precincts have offices elsewhere in the county, and the citation, not the map, tells you which court has your case.
A county court at law
The county has six county courts at law. Larger debt claims, and appeals from justice court, can end up here.
A district court
Fort Bend's ten district courts are at the Fort Bend County Justice Center, 1422 Eugene Heimann Circle, Richmond, according to the county. Big-balance cases, such as some vehicle deficiency suits, are often filed at this level.
What Fort Bend Courts Tell the Public
Two things on the county's court pages are worth knowing before you decide what to do.
Default can happen on paper. Precinct 4's debt claim page explains that if the defendant doesn't answer, the judge may enter a default judgment without a hearing when the plaintiff submits enough written evidence of its damages. In other words, a creditor may not need to show up in court to win if you stay silent. The same page says that once an answer is filed, the court sets the case for trial and notifies both sides by mail.
Free language help in the higher courts. The county courts at law page states that Fort Bend's county courts at law and district courts provide language assistance at no cost to anyone involved in a court proceeding who has difficulty communicating in English. If Spanish is your first language and your case is in one of those courts, you can ask for an interpreter. We also speak Spanish with our clients.
Count Your Days Carefully
The rules, not the county website, control your deadline:
- In a justice court, the answer is due by the end of the 14th day after you were served (Tex. R. Civ. P. 502.5).
- In a county court at law or district court, the answer is due by 10:00 a.m. on the Monday after 20 days from service (Tex. R. Civ. P. 99(b)).
- In those higher courts, a response to a summary judgment motion filed on or after March 1, 2026 is due 21 days after the motion is filed (Rule 166a).
Some county pages describe the justice court answer period in slightly different words. Don't let that cost you a day. Use our answer deadline calculator and then call us to double-check.

Defenses We Look For
- Ownership. A debt buyer must connect your account to itself through each sale. Generic bills of sale that don't identify your account are a common weak point.
- Amount. We compare the balance claimed with the statements and the account agreement, looking for fees and interest that don't belong.
- Time. Texas generally allows 4 years to sue on a debt (Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 16.004). A debt buyer can't sue on a time-barred consumer debt (Fin. Code § 392.307).
- Identity. Mixed credit files and identity theft happen. If the account isn't yours, we make the plaintiff prove otherwise.
- Collector conduct. Threats, false statements or suing on old debt can violate the FDCPA or the Texas Debt Collection Act. Those claims are a separate service from debt defense. Read more on our FDCPA page.
When a negotiated resolution is the better path, we negotiate it and put the terms in writing, including what happens to the lawsuit.

Rosenberg FAQs
The courthouse is so close. Should I just go handle it myself?
You can file an answer yourself, and the law library can point you to forms. But an answer is only the start. Discovery, evidence objections and summary judgment are where many debt cases are decided, and that is where a lawyer helps most.
My case is in district court in Richmond. Is that worse than justice court?
It is more formal, with stricter rules on evidence and motions, and the answer deadline is calculated differently. It also gives the defense more tools, such as written discovery. We handle cases at every level.
Can a creditor take my truck or my paycheck?
Current wages can't be garnished for consumer debt (Tex. Const. art. XVI, § 28). Personal property, which can include vehicles, is exempt up to $50,000 for a single adult or $100,000 for a family (Property Code ch. 42), and your homestead is protected under chapter 41. Money sitting in a bank account is more exposed.
I already have a judgment. Is it too late?
Not necessarily. We review whether the judgment can be challenged and, if not, negotiate a post-judgment settlement. Post-judgment work uses the same flat fees as debt defense.
