Texas Debt Law

Credit reports, taxes and family

Do I have to pay a deceased relative's debts?

Short answer

Generally no, unless you co-signed or are otherwise liable. Debts are usually paid from the deceased person's estate. Collectors can contact the estate's representative but can't make you pay from your own money.
